There are rims – like the BMW rims – that use 2 or 3 components assembled together to produce a finished wheel. These OE rims can be made by many different methods of manufacturing.
When it comes to 3-piece wheels, the rim sections are typically spun from disks that are made up of aluminum. Usually, spun rim sections will offer the ability to custom-tailor wheels for special applications that would not be available otherwise. The rim sections are then bolted to the center & normally, sealant is applied in or on the assembly area to seal the wheel.
