As Volvo's first SUV, the XC90 has done remarkably well and is Volvo's top selling car in the U.S. and in 2005 was Volvo's top selling model across the world as well as winning the North American Car of the Year award and Sport/Utility of the Year (Motor Trend's) in 2003. A midsize luxury crossover, the four door SUV began production in 2002 and launched in America in 2003 with two different straight five cylinder engines, a turbocharged petrol engine and a regular diesel engine; two straight six engines, one turbocharged, the other not; and even a V8 (a somewhat uncommon thing for Volvo, straight five being their preferred engine and turbocharging a straight six when more power was desired) became available in 2005. The first generation continues production today, with a second generation projected to come out 2013.
