The 780 was the final 700 series car introduced for the line and was also the first 700 to be cut from the lineup, making its total production time from 1986 until 1990 (available in the U.S. a year later). Different from its series mates by being a two door coupe the 780 was available with engines that were all also on other 700 series cars and included three different turbo charged four cylinder engines as well as Volvo's only V6 engine (the PRV, after the three companies who contributed; Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo), and a straight six engine. In 1991 the 780 was cancelled making the total production 8,518 units; Volvo did not have a coupe to replace it until 1995.
The 780 offered only two rims during its four year production time; a 15" alloy rim finished in silver with 15 spokes, and a diamond spoked 15" alloy wheel with silver finish.
